“Boys in the Band” debuts

“Boys in the Band” debuts on New York stage. This was not the first production with a gay theme, but nothing before this had flung open the closet door with such emphatic flair. Looking back today, “Boys” seems somewhat primitive and not always fully enlightened, with a lot of self-doubt in some of the characters. But it also made no apologies for same-sex attraction, and that door only got wider as years went by.
