Of the 47 occupants on board, 20 were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Braniff International Airways Flight 352<\/strong>&nbsp;was a scheduled domestic flight from&nbsp;William P. Hobby Airport&nbsp;in&nbsp;Houston,&nbsp;Texas,&nbsp;United States, to&nbsp;Dallas Love Field&nbsp;in&nbsp;Dallas; on May 3, 1968, a&nbsp;Lockheed L-188A Electra&nbsp;flying on the route, registration N9707C, broke up in midair and crashed near&nbsp;Dawson, Texas, after flying into a severe&nbsp;thunderstorm. It was carrying five crew and 80 passengers; there were no survivors. Among those killed was Texas state representative&nbsp;Joseph Lockridge, the first black man to represent&nbsp;Dallas County&nbsp;in the&nbsp;Texas Legislature. Investigation revealed that the accident was caused by the captain&#8217;s decision to penetrate an area of heavy weather followed by a structural over-stress and failure of the airframe while attempting recovery from loss of control during a steep 180-degree turn executed in an attempt to escape the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Los Angeles Airways Flight 417<\/strong>\u00a0was a\u00a0Sikorsky S-61\u00a0helicopter that crashed on August 14, 1968 in the city of\u00a0Compton,\u00a0California. All <strong>eighteen passengers and three crew members <\/strong>were killed. The aircraft was destroyed by impact and fire. According to the\u00a0National Transportation Safety Board\u00a0the\u00a0probable cause\u00a0of the accident was\u00a0fatigue failure. The accident happened when the (arbitrarily designated) yellow blade, one of five main rotor blades, separated from the spindle that attached the blade to the rotor head. Following failure, the helicopter was uncontrollable and it fell to the ground. The fatigue crack originated in an area of substandard\u00a0hardness\u00a0and inadequate\u00a0shot peening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Los Angeles Airways Flight 841<\/strong>\u00a0was a\u00a0Sikorsky S-61\u00a0helicopter\u00a0that crashed at 5:50\u00a0p.m. on Wednesday May 22, 1968 in the city of\u00a0Paramount, California. All <strong>twenty passengers and three crew members<\/strong> were killed. The aircraft was destroyed by impact and fire. The\u00a0probable cause\u00a0of the accident was a mechanical failure in the blade rotor system, which then allowed one blade to strike the side of the fuselage. The other four blades were then thrown out of balance and all five rotor blades broke and then the rear fuselage and tail separated from the rest of the airframe.\u00a0The cause of the mechanical failure is undetermined.\u00a0At the time, it was the\u00a0worst helicopter-related accident\u00a0in U.S. aviation history,\u00a0not to be surpassed until the\u00a01986 Grand Canyon mid-air collision\u00a0which killed 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On December 27, 1968,\u00a0<strong>North Central Airlines Flight 458<\/strong>\u00a0crashed into a\u00a0hangar\u00a0while attempting a night landing in poor weather at\u00a0O&#8217;Hare International Airport\u00a0in\u00a0Chicago,\u00a0Illinois, in the\u00a0United States. Of the 41 passengers and four crew members, only 17 passengers and one crew member survived.\u00a0One person was killed and six were injured on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On December 27, 1968,\u00a0<strong>North Central Airlines Flight 458<\/strong>\u00a0crashed into a\u00a0hangar\u00a0while attempting a night landing in poor weather at\u00a0O&#8217;Hare International Airport\u00a0in\u00a0Chicago,\u00a0Illinois, in the\u00a0United States. Of the 41 passengers and four crew members, only 17 passengers and one crew member survived.\u00a0One person was killed and six were injured on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ozark Air Lines Flight 965<\/strong>\u00a0was a scheduled commercial flight from\u00a0Chicago, Illinois, to\u00a0Lambert Field\u00a0in\u00a0St. Louis, Missouri, with a scheduled intermediate stopover at\u00a0Greater Peoria Regional Airport\u00a0in\u00a0Peoria, Illinois. On March 27, 1968, the\u00a0Douglas DC-9-15\u00a0jetliner\u00a0operating the flight, carrying 44 passengers and five crew,\u00a0collided in mid-air\u00a0with a single-engined\u00a0Cessna 150F\u00a0while both aircraft were on approach to the same runway at Lambert Field. The DC-9 landed safely with no injuries to any of its 49 occupants, while both pilots in the two-person Cessna died in the collision and subsequent ground impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pan Am Flight 799<\/strong>\u00a0was an international cargo flight from\u00a0Los Angeles International Airport\u00a0to\u00a0Cam Ranh Airport\u00a0in South Vietnam that crashed on December 26, 1968, near Anchorage, Alaska. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 707-321C aircraft operated by\u00a0Pan American World Airways. All three crew members died in the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wien Consolidated Airlines Flight 55<\/strong>\u00a0was a scheduled domestic passenger flight in\u00a0Alaska\u00a0that crashed into\u00a0Pedro Bay\u00a0on December 2, 1968, killing all 39 on board.  The\u00a0Fairchild F-27B aircraft was operated by\u00a0Wien Consolidated Airlines\u00a0and was en route to\u00a0Dillingham\u00a0from\u00a0Anchorage, with three intermediate stops. The\u00a0NTSB\u00a0investigation revealed that the aircraft suffered a structural failure after encountering &#8220;severe-to-extreme&#8221; air turbulence.
